Before signing on the dotted line, be sure the apartment is right for you.
Apartment hunting can be an exciting and stressful time. While you’re looking for a space in the right location at the right price, it’s easy to forget about the other important factors that make an apartment nice to live in. Before you sign for the first property you see, have a look at these tips on what to check first.
- Quality
Don’t trust those pretty pictures you see online. Before you rent an apartment, always view it first! Keep in mind that cosmetic issues, such as broken blinds, can be easily fixed. Look for health and safety issues, such as insects, rodents, leaking faucets, water damage, dirty air filters, mold, and rust. If you’re not happy with the overall quality of the apartment, keep looking at listings.
- Neighbors
When you have the opportunity, introduce yourself to your potential neighbors and ask them a few basic questions about what it’s like to live there. Neighbors can give you a true perspective of the area and condition of the properties without the landlord or agent sugar-coating it.
- Neighborhood
Walk around the neighborhood to get a sense of the community. Better yet, drive through the area during rush hour if you will be commuting by car. This will help you get a better idea of what the traffic is like and how that will impact your daily life.
