Watch Out for These Unexpected Fire Hazards

Keep your home safe from the risk of fire.

While you are probably familiar with common fire risks such as an unattended stove or a faulty fireplace, there are many other fire hazards that might surprise you. If you want to protect your home against the risk of fire, keep your eyes out for these surprising fire hazards.

Newspapers

Surprisingly, stacks of old newspapers have been involved in more house fires than you would think. These fires broke out when old newspapers were stacked too close to gas tanks, electrical outlets, and space heaters. Luckily, it’s very easy to address this risk. Simply recycling old newspapers when you are done with them will stop them from accumulating in your home.

Dryer Lint

While dryer lint might seem like a minor thing, lint build-up is actually a serious fire hazard. Due to the extreme heat that is produced during a drying cycle, lint can easily combust and start a fire. However, this risk is easy to mitigate. Simply cleaning out your lint trap after running your dryer will prevent this fire hazard.

Dust

Dust is actually very flammable and it makes the perfect kindling to start a major fire. You should be particularly concerned about dust build-up near electrical outlets. All it takes is a rogue spark to set a dust bunny ablaze. Again, this is an easy hazard to deal with. Just make sure to clean your home thoroughly, paying particular attention to the areas where dust tends to accumulate.
