Emergency Preparedness Tips for First-Time Renters

Basic Safety Tips for Renters

Moving into your first apartment is an exciting time in anyone’s life. Whether you’re moving in with a friend, partner, or going at it on your own, you’re likely to be excited about decorating and making the place feel like home! While emergency preparedness may be the last thing on your mind, it’s important that you don’t forget basic safety tips. Here’s what first-time renters should know!

  • Know your local weather – If you’re moving to a different area or state, be sure you know what weather to expect with the seasons.
  • Talk to your neighbors – Learn what they do in the event of an emergency. Figure out who has the safest shelter locations, if anyone owns supplies like a backup generator, and if neighbors have any medical expertise.
  • Stay informed – Keep up to date with your local weather forecast so that you know when bad weather and storms are predicted.
  • Stock an emergency kit – Pack this kit full of essentials, such as blankets, non-perishable food, drinking water, flashlights, batteries, portable radio, your pet’s food and water, and a first aid kit.
  • Have a communication plan – Know if your cell phone operates without signal so that you can send emergency calls as needed. It’s also worth putting a plan in place for how you will stay in touch with loved ones if your cell phone does not operate.
  • Practice fire safety – Check your smoke detector to ensure it’s working correctly, know how to use a fire extinguisher, and outline multiple escape routes from your building.
