Use these tips to stand tall at any age.
If you’d rather not be someone who is hunched over, walks slowly, and has chronic joint pain, then stand up straight! Start working on your posture, which, it turns out, is as important as your mother said it was.
Keeping your body in proper alignment, improving your balance, and maintaining that alignment as you move is all part of what we call “good posture”. The simple stance will keep you looking youthful as the years go by, too!
Here are the top tips to improve your posture – for good!
Open up – Many of us spend our days hunched in front of a computer, but it’s important for us to stretch, open up, and improve our range of motion. To stay limber, get up every hour to stretch, walk, or stand.
Sit straight – When you do have to work at a desk, sit up with a good, tall posture with your shoulders dropped. This can take some getting used to, but don’t give in and slouch!
Strengthen your core – Pilates and yoga are a great way to build your strength and your “core”!
Support your spine – Strengthening back muscles allows us to stand up for long periods of time without our back hurting us. Exercises targeting the back extensors, neck flexors, pelvic muscles, and side muscles are crucial.
Lift weights – Women and men can prevent the “hunchback” with weight-bearing exercise, such as walking, stair climbing, and weight lifting.
Vitamin D – This is essential for bone health, and may help us maintain our muscles too. Try to get it from a healthy diet – and a walk in the sunshine!
Eat healthily – A balanced diet will keep everything else in check while you focus on your posture!
